The United States has made great strides in equality for many demographics. Unfortunately, workplace race discrimination remains a persistent issue. It can even affect employees’ careers and personal well-being.
Some areas of the country do better than others in addressing discrimination. Naturally, Pennsylvania residents should be curious about how the state stacks up against others.
Pennsylvania’s ranking
Pennsylvania ranks fifth for workplace discrimination complaints in the U.S. This data point may surprise many people. Sadly, that ranking does not fit the image that the state wants to project. Residents often proudly note that the area was originally a location settlers came to in search of freedom from discrimination.
However, race discrimination is a notable problem in the state. This is in addition to even more common charges of retaliation, as well as sexual and disability discrimination.
Comparison with other states
People may usually associate discrimination with the American South. The presumption may hold true to some extent. Only Tennessee, Arkansas, Georgia, and Nevada outpace Pennsylvania in workplace discrimination complaints.
Still, it is surprising that Pennsylvania has higher incidences of such grievances in comparison with more populous states, such as New York, Texas, Florida, and California.
Understanding these statistics highlights that prejudice in its various forms is not just in the imagination of minorities and underrepresented communities. More work is necessary to ensure fair treatment for all employees.
