What jobs have the most complaints about discrimination?

On Behalf of | Jan 27, 2022 | workplace discrimination |

Unfortunately, whatever line of work you are in, you could become a victim of racial discrimination. Though treating employees and job applicants differently based on their race is against the law in Pennsylvania, it still happens regularly here in the Harrisburg area.

Still, some industries are more notoriously racist against workers of color than others. Two of them that stand out are technology and publishing.

Tech industry

Big Tech companies lag behind the rest of the U.S. economy when it comes to hiring and promoting people of color, particularly Black and Latinx people. In the tech industry, the ratio of Black/Latinx employees to white employees is about half what it is in the rest of the private sector. POC employees at such major corporations as Facebook and Google have discussed the discrimination they have experienced while working there.

Publishing industry

In publishing, not only do many book publishers lack diversity in their workforce, they also tend to pay their Black authors less. In a social media experiment, 1,200 published authors shared what they earned in advances. About ten percent (122) of them earned more than $100,000 in advance of royalties for one of their books. Just seven of those high earners were Black, and only two identified as Latinx.

As we said above, discrimination is a problem throughout the private sector. Both state and federal law gives you the right to take legal action against discrimination and seek rightful compensation. Not only can a lawsuit help you restore what you lost in your career due to discrimination, but it can also help expose an employer’s illegal conduct and put a stop to it.
