Narcissists in leadership can increase workplace discrimination

On Behalf of | Sep 11, 2025 | workplace discrimination |

Workplaces thrive on collaboration, fairness and trust. However, when leaders display narcissistic tendencies, these values can quickly erode. Narcissism is more than just self-confidence; it is characterized by arrogance, entitlement and a lack of empathy.

In leadership roles, these traits can shape policies, influence organizational culture, and affect how employees are treated. One of the most concerning outcomes of narcissistic leadership is the rise in workplace discrimination.

Narcissistic traits and decision-making

Narcissistic leaders often prioritize their image and personal success over the collective good. Their decisions may be guided by a desire for admiration rather than fairness. For example, they might promote individuals who reinforce their ego while sidelining qualified employees who challenge them. This creates a culture where favoritism thrives, contributing to discrimination based on personal biases rather than merit.

Impact on organizational culture

The behavior of leaders strongly influences workplace culture. When narcissists hold leadership positions, they can create an environment of fear and competition instead of cooperation. Employees may feel pressured to tolerate discriminatory practices so that they can stay in favor. Diversity and inclusion efforts may be undermined if leaders perceive them as threats to their authority or status. Over time, this weakens trust across the organization, reducing employee morale and productivity.

Discrimination and marginalized employees

Narcissistic leaders tend to devalue individuals who do not fit into their preferred image of success. This often puts marginalized employees at greater risk of discrimination. Workers from minority backgrounds may be more likely to face exclusion, fewer opportunities or unfair criticism. Since narcissists lack empathy, they may fail to recognize the impact of their actions, leaving affected employees feeling unsupported.

Narcissistic leadership poses a serious risk to fairness and inclusion in the workplace. By fostering environments where favoritism, fear and discrimination can thrive, such leaders damage both individuals and organizations. Employees who are experiencing discrimination in the workplace should seek legal support to advocate for their rights.
